Humans, Religion and Intolerance

Humans (homo sapiens) as per definition have the most advanced and developed brain among all animals. The power of human brain and the way it works is beyond comprehension. However, humans have the ability to stoop down to the lowest possible levels that even an animal cannot. You could try to justify it by saying it is circumstances that make human behave like an animal. Fair enough. There are very few cases where circumstances force a man to behave weirdly. But when it is repeated frequently over a very small time period are these accidental circumstances or manipulated to justify their actions?

The religious intolerance that Kerala has witnessed in the recent past has reached the height of its glory. Until a couple of years back like most other people (many of them who even to date) even I thought Kerala is symbol of communal harmony. Malabar occupied by Muslims – who have been here for almost a thousand years; central Kerala occupied by Christians and Hindus scattered all over the state – was the perfect symbol of unity in diversity. What a great ambiance for humans to prosper – only if the above line were true. The recent hand chopping incident of a professor in Newman College, Thodupuzha and the many other shocking news that is still coming out, cannot be classified as incidents. Politicians or religious leaders who classify these repeated atrocities as incidents are merely trying to fool the people. If you close your eyes and believe there is no light in the world, there is nothing much that anyone can do to help you. There have been clear cut evidences in the past (young Kerala Muslims who were arrested from Kashmir,  their indulgence in bomb blasts across the country, terrorist camp in Aluva etc.) that a vast majority in the so called minority Muslims in Kerala want to convert Kerala into an Islamic Republic of Kerala – it was often dismissed by both the media and politicians as a conspiracy by Hindutva-vadis (supporters of Hinduism, who according to the media wants only Hindus to stay on this land). When the High Court of Kerala asked the government to investigate the truth behind love jihad it was dismissed by the minority groups as Hindutva agenda supported by Justice Shankaran. I have personally seen posters stuck by Solidarity, SIO and similar organisations claiming that Justice Shankaran is an agent of the RSS and the society should isolate him. Unfortunately for them, recently the chief minister of the state said publicly that there is a huge section of Muslims who want to convert Kerala into an Islam majority state in the next 20 years. There have been shocking reports of Taliban courts operating inside the state. Shocking to the ordinary citizen. For them it was only Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and the RSS that were communal, Muslims and Christians are merely fighting for their survival. But all of a sudden things have changed. Shocking indeed. What is noteworthy is that this statement has been made by a veteran, well-respected comrade V.S. Achuthanandan and not by any member of the communal BJP or the intolerant RSS. Not surprisingly, Congress spent no time in playing the communal card. According to them the Chief Minister is trying to create a disharmony within a harmonious and prosperous state. Despite terrorists being arrested, despite hands being chopped off,  despite a teacher brutally murdered in front of school children, despite a professor beaten to death in front of police, despite books being burnt in the name of religion – everything in the state is perfect.  Just because the Left Democratic Front has an honest human as the Chief Minister doesn’t mean they are any good either. It was the same Left that teamed up with Abdul Nasser Madani in the Lok Sabha elections. Similarly the NDF/Popular Front of India was a part of the Congress led UDF. They have time and again proven that there is no point in hoping one of them will take charge and save God’s Own Country from communal powers. Who are we kidding? Why do politicians fear to call a spade a spade? Swami Vivekananda described Kerala as a lunatic asylum. Many people including me wondered how could such a noble person make such a rash statement. Maybe he foresaw all that is happening now.

I pity those people who don’t miss out any opportunity to get public sympathy by whining, My name is Khan, I am not a terrorist.  Do they expect every Khan to be a terrorist? Self pity is a sign of spinelessness and worse than suicide. Instead of whining how inferior they are and why they need reservations, why not condemn these attacks? Why not hold freedom marches against these radical elements within their own community and really prove that Islam is a religion of peace? I was shocked by the kind of intolerance that many believers of the only truth show. For them religion is bigger than the country and human life. Like someone said, bottled water and religion are the biggest curses mankind has ever seen. If we don’t do it now it will be the future generations that will have to suffer for our inaction. It is time to rethink.

Those of you who think this post is because of my highly biased religious/political views and classify me as another fanatic Hindu are welcome to do so. You have the right to be ignorant. Those who believe I am spreading poison through words will be classified as moron. Like how I condemn and criticise Muslim terrorists I totally condemn terrorists who are Hindus, the LTTE and similar organisations who believe in violence. Despite the fact that he is a Muslim, for me A.P.J Abdul Kalam was India’s best President.  I come from a culture that has taught me to respect all religions equally. I come from a culture that believes there are multiple paths to reach the ultimate. I come from a culture that prays for the betterment of humanity – Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavanthu – Om Shanti Shanti Shanti.

The issue that you have depicted in this post, is very relevent in the context of the recent Newman college hand chopping issue. The only reason for NOT having a communal violance errupted in kerala for this issue is that the victim was only an ordinary JOSEPH. Absece of the oranisational network and political legitimacy (unlike RSS) may be the reason, the christians restrained their protest within an ‘edaya lekhanam’.

Banning of organisations like PFI, may can tempororily stun the growth of islamic terror. But it will raise from ashes with all its might in a few years – with a new name and new form. It has happened earlier, it will happen again. Relegious fundamentalism is so deep-rooted in muslim connunity in India, that a reform if possible could only happen from within.Enforcing laws that can aid the efforts of bringing in these reforms, is what that can be done from the part of government.

Unfortunately, i must say, the TITLE of this article being ‘Humans, Relegion and Intolerence’, a non-hindu with a little relegious spirit (who do not know you in person), reading your blog may complain that an attempt has been made through out this article to veil hindutva-terror,in the shadow of its younger sibling, islam terror.

    regards
    vishnu.

i totally agree with vishnu.. u wer a bit too mellow on de hindutva goons.. de SOHRABBUDIN case and de gujarat riots r not happening anywer else.. but i guess kerala will b soon topping the list …the islamic terror groups flourish over here in kerala cos i guess this is where they hav more territorial and financial(most number of muslims in any state who r abv de BPL)advantage!
and by de way ur comment..”communal BJP or the intolerant RSS”..was that sarcasm or genuine realization..hehe. :P

Vishnu, please read the last paragraph.
Anirudh, Sarcasm indeed. :) Modi is a good chief minister in my opinion. I am a highly opinionated person. So you can argue for the sake of arguing. You think Sohrabuddin was the only fake encounter case? What about the paid stone throwers in Kashmir and the infinite other cases that happen in North East. Just because it was against Modi government media spared not even a second to blow it up. Read wikipedia or any unbiased media about Godhra riots. Adding on, Kerala is not the place where most number of Muslims are above BPL. It is Gujarat, yes, the racist, communal Narendra Modi’s Gujarat. ;)

The same topic of your blog post, from a demographic angle. You may love reading this ;)

I would like to stress the last paragrah of this article – “This article has NOTHING TO DO WITH any particular community’s role to overturn India’s religious demography in its favour. Even so, they bear watching.”

Hey . u all had made Sohrabuddin a Hero. Do wel,l but dont make a hue and cry when an another 26/11 happens.

The deeds of a few cannot be generalised to criticize a religion as a whole. Fundamentalists are there in every religion. You are a being a bit harsh on muslims. About love jihad – no proof has been found to substantiate the comment. Among Hindus wat abt the clashes between different castes to reaffirm their backwardness??If the majority socially and economically forward OBCs can have reservation y not the minority muslims?? And abt ur comment on the film MY NAME IS KHAN – it’s only a depiction of what the majority muslim community has to go through for the deeds of a few fanatics.
And yeah i agree with vishnu banning any organisation is not feasible. They willrise in another name. What about Hindu organisations like Shiv sena and sreeram sena and the RSS??What exactly are they propagating??Isn’t that hatred and violence??

  8. Prasanth said on August 4th, 2010

Mahesh, like I said to Vishnu, please read the last paragraph again. Hope that will clear the doubts about me condemning a “whole religion”. Friend, please read what has been written once more. I condemn all sorts of violence that any religion/group/organisation promotes. The recent comment that the CM made was against PFI, not against entire Muslims. Who is asking anyone to take it as a comment against all Muslims? And I humbly request you to stop believing what the 24/7 “modern” news channel throw to the people day in and day out.

Secondly, regarding lack of evidence for love jihad – well let’s wait for all evidence then and then act, and let’s hope we will still have time to act. If the judiciary is of any value, let’s listen to it – it was an order by the High Court of Kerala asking the police to look into the matter. The govt. clearly was happy appeasing minorities.

Thirdly, from the comment I can gather that you have not bothered to look at the percentage wise split up of communities and castes. If we are to go by the actual numbers in the society, upper caste Hindus (Nambiar, Namboothiri etc.) are the minorities – not Ezhava nor Muslims.

Lastly, regarding the movie name and stuff – why is it that certain people want to take only the “sympathy” that the terrorists are bringing and not condemn/issue “fatwa” against terrorists?

  9. mahesh said on August 4th, 2010

PFI is a terrorist organisation beyond doubt. What i said about ur comment was that you were over critical about muslims – “Lastly, regarding the movie name and stuff – why is it that certain people want to take only the “sympathy” that the terrorists are bringing and not condemn/issue “fatwa” against terrorists?”. The movie is not to yield sympathy it’s to condemn the fact that the majority is suffering for the deeds of some fanatics. No religion preaches crime and violence and i believe muslim community do condemn the terrorists. As i said fundamentamilists r there in every religion who are trying to upset the whole harmony.
Now abt the caste system, the whole caste system is crap . It should have been based on some statistics then that the muslims were termed minority . What i said was if once believed to be backward communities who r richer than the so called forward majority, is still enjoying the reservation they’ve gotten, then you can’t just take away the reservation of once minority muslims. The whole system has to be revamped which obviously won’t happen.
About love jihad, investigations have proved there is no such thing happening in kerala. It’s not like “well let’s wait for all evidence then and then act, and let’s hope we will still have time to act”. Investigations were there and it showed no such thing is happening.

  10. mahesh said on August 4th, 2010

Btw nambiar and nampoothiri r the sub castes within the same community. If we start giving reservations like that, there r hundreds of castes among hindus most of them will be minority, and also the castes will be different in different parts of the country. So we are still following the once established assertion of backwardness in reservation policies.

  11. Prasanth said on August 4th, 2010

I was using Namboothiri/Nambiar as an example. Let’s leave Hinduism, let’s look at Parsis. What reservation do they have? They are 1% of the muslim population in the country. And where Hindus are less, like Kashmir, give reservation. Double standards is not a sign of intelligence. And I really don’t accept the idea that change is not possible. It should begin from your own self. And if at least the educated youth do it, that will make a hell of a difference. Please don’t misinterpret what I said – all I said is when people make such movies, please accept the fact that it is your own religion that is doing it. And show it to the public that you are against them. As long as they don’t come out in masses and protest what their own community does, it is difficult to believe that they really condemn it.

I'll eat you tonight if you don't leave a comment.
